Small portable air conditioners work just like central conditioners, the only difference is the are they are able to cool down efficiently. While it may seem that central air conditioners are a better choice because they are more powerful, it actually boils down to the size of room you want to be cooled. For instance, there is no point in cooling the entire house if you are the only one living in it and you mostly stay in one room.  

Small portable air conditioners are perfect for people living in small apartments and those who want to be more energy-efficient in their monthly bills. One of the biggest advantages in having a small air conditioning unit is that the energy used is only enough to cool the necessary room and none is wasted in other parts of the house that you aren't usually in. However, even if you decide that you want to have a portable air conditioner, there are more things to think about further. 

For instance, there are two kinds of portable air conditioners, the window type and the through-the-wall type. The difference of each are explained already in their names, so you may want to take a second about your preference before going ahead and purchasing a unit.  

If you are still torn about what to choose between a window type and a through-the-wall type, each has its own set of advantages. For instance, the window type portable air conditioners don't require you anymore to drill a hole in your wall for the air conditioner to be installed. If you have the appropriate size of window, your AC can easily fit in there. On the downside, you will have to give up a window space.  

On the other hand, through-the-wall type of small air conditioners is considerably more work because you will have to drill a hole in your wall to be alloted for the unit. On the plus side, you don't have to give up a window space, and you can have a more airtight fit for the AC because you know exactly the size of the hole to be made.  

Another new addition to the line of small air conditioners are the freestanding ones. These are actually one of the pricier types of air conditioners, but it's the most convenient especially if you keep moving. You can easily take it with you because this type usually has casters already for your ease.  

Whichever type of small portable air conditioner you choose to buy, make sure that it fits your needs well, and more importantly your budget. When it comes to cooling down your home, you have a lot of options available for you. However, to avoid being confused at all the information available to you and to narrow down your choices easily and faster, you have to determine your own personal needs and requirement.
